Creative Cause's dynamic 3-year-old colt My Boy Jack guaranteed himself a spot in the field for the May 5 Kentucky Derby (G1) after taking Saturday's Lexington S. (G3) by head over Telekinesis.

In another thrilling performance, My Boy Jack came from the back of the 10-horse field in the last half-mile to secure his second graded stakes win this year. Maybe most important was the 20 points he earned on the Road to the Kentucky Derby Challenge series, giving his a total of 52, 14th on the Derby list. The top 20 horses are guaranteed a starting spot in the Run for the Roses.

“Unbelievable. Everyone knows we came here to get points and he got the job done today. We’re just thrilled,” said Kirk Godby of Don't Tell My Wife Stables, co-owner with Monomoy Stables LLC. “When I saw (jockey) Kent (Desormeaux) bring him out down the backstretch and we were within six or seven lengths, I felt pretty good about it. I was just hoping he had the gas to get home in the short stretch.”

Breaking from the outside post, Desormeaux took My Boy Jack over to the rail and was some 12 lengths from the front when he began his run at the half-mile marker. Taken outside around the final turn, My Boy Jack was in full gear at the top of the stretch. In the final furlong, he out-battled Telekinesis to finish the 1 1/16-miles in 1:44.22.

The victory was worth $120,000 and increased My Boy Jack’s earnings to $645,145 with a record of 10-3-3-2. Prior to Saturday, he was beaten less than a length in the Louisiana Derby (G2) and won the Southwest S. (G3). At two, the dark bay colt competed mostly on the turf, winning the Zuma Beach S. at Santa Anita Park.

Creative Cause is a top-five Third-Crop Sire this year in several categories, including progeny earnings, winners and stakes winners.

My Boy Jack was bred by Brereton Jones from the unraced Mineshaft mare Gold N Shaft, who is a daughter of Grade 2 winner Gold N Delicious.
