Cairo Memories, a 2-year-old daughter of Cairo Prince, showed a spectacular turn of foot in Sunday’s $200,000 Surfer Girl S. at Santa Anita Park when she sprinted away from the field at the top of the stretch to win by 2 ¼-lengths.

The Surfer Girl was the gray/roan filly’s stakes debut following her sparkling Sept. 5 maiden-breaking win on the Del Mar turf, which earned her a TDN “Rising Star” tag.

Sunday’s one-mile turf affair was almost a carbon copy of her debut. She sat in fourth for the first half of the race, then switched from inside to the three path going into the final bend to launch her bid. Circling around the front runners, Cairo Memories blew by them and was four lengths in front in a flash. She geared down late when the outcome was certain, stopping the timer in 1:34.27 on the firm turf.

“Shes been doing everything right,” said winning trainer Bob Hess. “We were encouraged by the way she broke her maiden and she’s been moving forward in her training. Hopefully, this sets us up for the Breeders’ Cup Dance.”

Hess was referring to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1), which runs Nov. 5 at Del Mar.

Cairo Memories, owned by David Bernsen LLC and Schroeder Farms LLC, has earned $162,000 in her two wins.

The winner was bred by Brereton C. Jones and is out of the excellent producer Incarnate Memories, also the dam of Cairo Memories’ stakes-winning full sister Cariba.

Cairo Prince, currently first on the 2021 Fourth-Crop sire list by stakes winners with six, has been red-hot of late, accounting for four stakes winners in the past month.
