FRIENDS LAKE was a swift and game two-year-old, breaking his maiden at Saratoga going 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:17 after fractions of :45.1 and 1:10.2. In his very next start he won the $100,000 Sleepy Hollow Stakes at Belmont by an easy 3 1/2 lengths earning a 99 Beyer....the highest by any AP Indy 2-year-old colt.
As an early three-year-old FRIENDS LAKE blossomed to real stardom by winning the Grade 1 $1,000,000 Florida Derby. In this major race he defeated THE CLIFF'S EDGE and TAPIT who both were at the top of their games and each went on to win Grade 1 races in their next starts.
