OBS 2yo Sale off to strong start for Airdrie stallions

American Freedom, Cairo Prince and Upstart all were represented by horses that brought at least $250,000 during Tuesday's opening session of OBS Spring 2-year-old sale in Florida.

Cairo Prince topped the trio with hip No. 202, which sold for $335,000 to John Ballantyne/ N B S Stable. The gray/roan colt was consigned by Randy Miles, agent. The colt's dam Smart 'n Special, is a full sister to Personal Ensign S. (G1) winner Shadow Cast and was bred by F. Thomas Conway.

Early in the session, hip No. 78, a colt from the first crop of American Freedom consigned by de Meric Sales, agent, went to Mike Ryan, agent, for $285,000. The colt was purchased by de Meric for $17,000 at the 2020 OBS October Yearling sale. Bred in Kentucky by Fred Hertrich III, the bay juvenile is from the same family as Grade 1 winner Without Feathers and multiple stakes winner Saratoga Snacks.

American Freedom made an immediate impact on the racetrack when his first starter American Bound won a Keeneland maiden special weight on April 2.

Upstart rounded out the excellent resorts with a filly who brought a top bid of $275,000, purchased by Shug McGaughey, agent. Hip No. 54 was consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, agent and bred by Gainesway Thoroughbreds and Bridlewood Farm. 

Upstart is currently in the top 10 on the Second-Crop Sire list and top five by winners and wins.
