Stop me if you’ve heard this one before but trainer Wesley Ward debuted a speedy new youngster at Keeneland Saturday as Heartily (Complexity) romped to become a new ‘TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard‘ in the nightcap.
The 4-5 favorite faced a field of largely inexperienced runners who saw little but this OBS April grad’s heels as he rocketed out to lead from an inside draw under John Velazquez. The only rival to keep pace early was Telecaster (Kantharos) as this group got strung out in dramatic fashion into the far turn. Heartily was keen to go on with it and, as Telecaster yielded at the quarter pole, it was a one-man show with Velazquez putting the bow on a five-win day as the favorite opened up at will to graduate by 6 1/2 lengths in the end.
From Complexity‘s second crop, Heartily is out of a winning Majesticperfection first dam who has a perfect strike rate of three winners from as many to the track. She’s produced a pair of stakes horses in Bayshore Stakes winner Reasoned Analysis (Upstart) as well as Jerome Stakes third Ican (Preservationist). After RNA’ing at Keeneland as a yearling, Heartily was picked up by Lael Stable for $375,000 at OBS April this year. We Love Lucy has not reported a foal since Heartily in 2023 but did return to Complexity for a full-sibling to him in 2026.
