Marquee Prince powers to victory in Black Gold S.

Cairo Prince’s talented 3-year-old colt Marquee Prince captured his second straight stakes Saturday at Fair Grounds with a stylish, 3 1/4-length win in the $75,000 Black Gold S.

After taking Fair Grounds’ Captain Maestri Memorial S. on the turf a month ago, Marquee Prince is now a stakes winner on both grass and the main track. His record improved to 4-0-0 in seven starts, and his earnings moved to $150,451 with Saturday’s win.

Rains caused the Black Gold to be switched to the main track, with the field scratching down to six from the original eight. Marquee Prince found a good stalking spot just off the pacesetter Spectacular Gem as the field made its way through a half-mile in :48.41.

Florent Geroux moved Marquee Prince alongside the early leader going into the far turn, then took over at will with a quarter-mile to run. He easily held off Tobacco Road to finish the mile on the “good” main track in 1:39.02.

Marquee Prince is owned by Rick, Donna and Jeff Awtrey and was bred in Kentucky by Brereton C. Jones.

Marquee Prince is a son of the Include mare Try to Remember, who was stakes-placed on three occasions and also the dam of stakes winner and Grade 1-placed Holiday Soiree.
