Midnight Charlie had managed to hit the board only once since breaking his maiden over recent Whirlaway S. winner Boston Bull, but has been relatively close versus stiffer competition than here, most recently finishing fourth in the Count Fleet S. over a muddy Aqueduct track on 1/4/03. Back to a sprint here he was sent off the 7-2 favorite and trailed the field through to the top of the lane and then turned on the speed to win going away by 2 3/4 lengths.
